A Qualitative Study on the Mother¡¯s Parenting Experience who has Young Adult Child with ASD and Servant Syndrome

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to explore the parenting experience of mothers who has young adult child with ASD and savant syndrome. For the purpose of this study, in-depth interviews were conducted with 9 mothers of ASD with Savant Syndrome.
Through in-depth interviews, the experience of perceiving and developing their child¡¯s savant ability was examined. Various difficulties and demands that parents had during that experience was also analyzed. As a result of analyzing the data collected through interviews, 6 main themes and 22 sub-themes were derived. The main themes were 1) the emergence and development of savant skills, 2) supporting the development of savant abilities, 3) interaction between ASD and Savant syndrome, 4) the light and shadow of the savant abilities, 5) difficulties encountered in the journey with children with savant abilities, 6) expectation for the educational support. Based on the research results, parents have been striving to further develop their child¡¯s savant skills, but still confused with their child's abilities. And there are still many difficulties that those parents encounter, therefore, they expect more systematic support. Above all, most participants were hoped to their child to live as healthy members of the society.
